Carburizing

Thermochemical treatment consisting of introducing carbon into the surface of the steel to increase its surface hardness. The resulting change in material properties increases wear resistance and resistance to fatigue/traction wear.

Stress Relief

Parts that are difficult to harden or prone to deformation — with varied cross-sections or extensive machining — should undergo stress relief after roughing or immediately before finishing or pre-machining, to minimise deformation during hardening. It consists of heating followed generally by slow cooling, without altering the original properties of the material.

Tempering

Tempering is carried out to increase the toughness (resistance to high pressure without fracture) of the hardened material. The gain in toughness is achieved by eliminating stresses produced during hardening and by relaxing the rapidly cooled structure, resulting in a reduction in the hardness obtained during hardening.

Hardening

Treatment aimed at increasing the hardness of steels by altering their microstructure, providing high hardness and mechanical strength.

Nitriding

A thermochemical treatment that surface-hardens the material through the diffusion of nitrogen (N₂) and ammonia (NH₃) inside the furnace during treatment.
